Emo style, including the hair, jewelry and body art, has taken the world by storm.
Emo isn't just short for emotional. The word, when shortened, takes on an entirely different meaning. It brings to mind images of people and a certain type of music. For some, it's nothing more than that genre of music. For others, it's a way of life that encompasses both style and state of mind. Much like rock was incarnated in various forms throughout the 1960s and '70s, Emo began it's heyday with the dawn of the new millennium. One important element of Emo style is the body art that many people wear.
- When deciding on what kind of tattoo you're going to get, it's always important to consider why. This reflection is not merely because the art is more than likely going to be with you your whole life, but also as a way of gaining ideas on what to ink on your body. The reflection shouldn't be so much on why you want a tattoo as why you became Emo. If there was a tragic event or a combination of events, paying a tribute to them through either blatant or subtle imagery within the tattoo could be an option. A face, date or phrase could all serve as equally effective marks to remind yourself and those around you of why you chose your lifestyle.
- Many people who identify themselves with the Emo crowd do so because of the music that has emerged from the scene. Less angry and more emotional than punk rock, Emo music is characterized by its style, bands and most importantly, lyrics. If you love a certain band or group, their logo is a mark that would pay homage to their message, long after the band is gone. On the other hand, your favorite lyrics to a song may describe your emotions in beautifully arranged words. These lyrics could serve as part of a larger design or as a stand-alone tattoo.
- People, especially within the Emo clique, find that certain symbols have meanings to them that only they understand. Religious symbols may mean something to a specific group, but something totally different to you. This is just one example; others may use different shapes, animals and colors to relate back to themselves. In the end, your body is forever and truly yours, and if you would ink something on it, it must have meaning to you before anyone else.
- Serious Emos decide early on which path they are going to take. They will generally align themselves with the mainstream or seek to avoid it through counterculture. Protesting against a certain element of the mainstream is a popular endeavor taken on by the Emo crowd. To mark your own body against an element of the establishment is the ultimate method of proving your allegiance to the cause. It displays a total lack of respect for those who identify themselves with it, and while it may seem offensive to some or many, it allows you to proudly display your rejection of the status quo.
